    Sunday Setlist … January 11, 2009

Good afternoon, and welcome to the January 11th edition of “Sunday Setlists“.

This Sunday morning  at GracePoint was awesome and the second service was packed!  I played electric mandolin.  Good times!

    The setlist:

Elevation is the walk-in song for current series.  Fun song.  Last week, the band put in a pretty long pause after the bridge (which is pretty quiet) then slammed back into the chorus.  We threw in a little twist this morning…  Rod had this youtube video on his Macbook of the “mole” scene from Austin Powers and ran it through his keyboard mixer.  We died laughing during soundcheck.  Rod didn’t play it during the first service, but he did in the second service.  I doubt anyone got the reference…  Yes, we’re a little odd.

We Shine.  A great Fee song.  We play it a high-step higher than recorded to avoid detuning guitars.  Sometimes “we may get a little wild, ’cause we’re the people of God, yeah the people of God.”

Let God Arise is my favorite Tomlin song.  Probably because it’s one of his most upbeat songs.

Sing My Love is a good one from Sarah McMillan.  It’s got a tasty little guitar solo in it too!  Bruce (lead guitar) played it, but I spent some time working on the solo too.  Next time I’ll speak up that I’d like take a turn!

Hosanna was a new one for us this week.  The band had fun playing it.  I used a phaser effect going while I played rhythm throughout most of the song.  I thought it added a nice touch.  I originally programmed the effect in my Digitech RP250 for Solid Rock, but I use it on Mighty to Save, and now Hosanna too.  It will be interesting to see if this song sticks around.  I heard one negative comment that it was hard to sing.  It might have just been that it was new…

Can’t Stop is my favorite Leeland song.  When I first heard it on the radio, I immediately bought it on itunes and listened to it about 500 times.  It’s a fun one.  My only complaint here is that I don’t like using what are normally “worship” songs during the offering time.  It just feels weird to me.  But I don’t pick the songs anymore, so I’ll deal with it.  This one wasn’t too bad, since it’s a radio single…

Band lineup, in case you’re interested:

    • two vocalists
    • two electric guitars
    • electric mandolin
    • bass
    • keyboards (who knows how many Rod is currently using on Sundays… I think it’s seven!)
    • drums

Wow, that’s quite a set. Interesting choice for your walk-in…we need to do more U2 in our church. Thanks for posting this…I love seeing how the rest of the body of Christ is worshiping each week. Keep up the good work.

    2. Ronnie says:

Oh. I forgot to add that Denny was sporting a new China cymbal. Rivets on it and everything. It sounded awesome. I guess he was trying to compete with Deric’s patent-pending trashcan cymbal.

    3. I prefer Tomlin’s quieter stuff, but Let God Arise is a keeper.

Thanks for posting. All this U2 stuff…I’m going to have to start listening and learning… ;)

    4. Denny says:

There’s no competing with Deric’s trash-can cymbal, that thing has YEARS of character in it. Not to mention he finds the perfect time of when to use it! I do have to admit though, I absolutely enjoy the rivets and the sound the new Wuhan delivers. Half-time grooves will never be the same :-) What an absolutely fun Sunday.. the songs were powerful and the spirit was moving!

    5. Awesome song selections. I plan on bringing some Fee songs to my congregation.

    6. Gary Durbin says:

I love the thematic value with Elevation. Familiar for everyone to connect to. Great set.

    7. Awesome set Ron - and electric mandolin. Would love that and your programming passion/ability as part of my team :-) I’ll get praying harder now.

I’m surprised you had a comment about Hosanna being hard to sing - it was one of those instant songs in my church. And yeah - Let God Arise is great. I need to rest it for a while before it burns out though :)

    8. Wow! Seven keyboards!! That must be sweet.
Great idea with “Elevation” as a walk in!
So do you guys pick a walk-in song for each series and stick with it until the series is complete? I like that concept!

    9. Ronnie says:

We occasionally use a common walk-in song for an entire series. Especially if ties in well to the theme. I think we’ve only done it a few times though… maybe three times. Usually it rotates between songs that fit the theme, or just random.

    10. I should look into doing some U2. For a while before I got here our worship team did alot of apologetix type songs for worship, for the past few years since I have been here I kinda went way the other direction using “secular” songs. Unfortunately that means I have refrained from using some great songs that aren’t praise and worship. I should look into working some songs back in. Thanks.
