Sunday Setlist … January 25, 2009
Wow! It’s hard to believe that the weekend is almost over. But what better to commemorate the weekend than with a Sunday Setlist post! Go check out Fred McKinnon’s Sunday Setlist to find links to dozens of other setlists.
Today was a special day at GracePoint. It was our five-year anniversary, and we had a big lunch party after church. Good times.
Now to the music…
- One Way - Hillsong United
- Salvation is Here - Hillsong United
- Sing to the King - Billy James Foote/Passion
- Hosanna - Hillsong United
- Birthday - The Beatles (offering/exit)
The band: two female vocalists for the first 4 songs, two male vocalists on Birthday, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric mandolin, drums, keys
One Way is always fun. It’s a nice one because we can use either male or female vocals without changing keys. Amy sang it today. In fact, we had only female vocals on the first 4 songs.
Salvation is Here is another great one. (It didn’t occur to me until tonight that we were a little heavy on the Hillsong…) Amy sang this one as well. We play it in the key of B, instead of D, whenever she sings it. Nash did a great job on the bass solo. I love the chorus: “Cause I know my God saved the day. And I know His word never fails. And I know my God made a way for me. Salvation is here.”
Sing to the King seems to be the church’s favorite song right now. And rightly so. We drop it down to the key of D, instead of E, to better fit Christina’s range. We’ve always added a guitar solo near the end, but we also added one in the middle this week. Bruce took the first one, and I took the second one on mandolin. I think it was my first solo. I don’t really remember… Of course mine only had 25% as many notes as Bruce’s. But who’s counting anyway?
Hosanna made it’s second appearance at GP. This one is interesting. The band loves it. My wife hates it. Seriously hates it. Very bizarre. And just in case you’re as curious as I am, Wikipedia has a decent description of the meaning of the word “Hosanna”. Oh yeah… Amy sang this one.
Birthday was one we had to dust off. I think Mike and I were the ones in the lineup today that were around last time we played it. Gil might have been too. As I mentioned earlier, we used this at the end of the service as a celebration of GracePoint’s first five years.
GracePointers - I’d be curious to know your thoughts on Hosanna. Leave a comment.
Hosanna. I don’t really care for Hillsong’s version, but Starfield does a nice cover of it. It’s strange how one song really clicks for one person and really grates on another’s nerves.
I don’t know the Starfield one. I’ll have to check it out.
Interesting. Hosanna really gets our worshippers singing and someitmes we do Hillsong’s version and other times more like Starfield.
Soemtimes you never know…
Buck says,
Hillsong is great, but Buck is not that big of a fan.
Love your song choices! I can’t pick just one to comment on they are all really great songs! It’s ok to go heavy on the Hillsong, I love it.
Call us Hillsong - Wichita. While I share Buck ’s view of Hillsong overall, I must say I am a big fan of Hossana. I’m partial to a song with a lot of texture and transitions, and the way we (Edge) perform it their version, it has tremedous depth. Not quite to the “Sing to the Kng” level… but this week it gained a lot of ground. When I look out (and not blinded by the lights), SthK has the house rocking in Worship, and gets people ready for the message, but it’s getting over-used, Hosanna could be a good replacement.
