What was he thinking?
I received an email at work today that I found hilarious. It was from one of our newer suppliers. There was a quote underneath the guy’s signature:
“I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” — Douglas Adams
What was he thinking?
This is not what you want your customer seeing! I found it funny, but I’m also considering mentioning it to his boss. Not good for business.
Any idea what this is from? One of his books?
It’s from a biography about him. He was reported to have said it when he was writing So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Adams#The_Hitchhiker.27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy)
I started to make this comment first, and got distracted looking for the quote.
The problem usually comes from mixing work and personal emails. And from mixing intraoffice communication with communication with people outside the company.
I imagine most of the emails the guy sends are either to friends or to other people in the company. At least in some companies, a signature like that is fine for intraoffice emails. But then these people set it as their default signature and forget to remove or switch it when they send other emails.
Your exactly right Jason. I replied back to the guy that I liked the quote, and he responded that he forget to delete it from his signature. He normally only uses it for internal emails. Which still doesn’t make him look very good to his management…
as a staunch defender of selective unprofessionalism, i’m glad you didn’t narc on him. –jack
Interestingly… Jack… the guy’s name was Jack.
