Mandolin Duets - Chamber Music at the Barn

    June 29th, 2009

Unfortunately I won’t be in town, but I still wanted to pass along this concert opportunity. Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg will be playing Wednesday thru Friday this week as part of the Chamber Music at the Barn series.

I’ve never heard of Caterina before, but Mike Marshall is incredible. If you are anywhere near Wichita, you should check it out.

    Sunday Setlist … June 28, 2009

    June 28th, 2009

    Buenas dias!

What a powerful day at GracePoint today!  Bryson delivered an incredible message about God’s purposes for this recession that we find ourselves in the middle of.  The music was awesome.  The air was hot and humid. Well, I guess that last one wasn’t such a great thing.  This morning, we found ourselves in the gym at Northwest HS instead of the auditorium.  It’s actually a nice space except for the lack of air conditioning…

This week, the music was toned down significantly with some very nice acoustic stuff.

    The setlist:

    • See His Love by Kim Walker
    • Hope Now by Addison Road
    • Love is Here by Tenth Avenue North
    • Here With Me by MercyMe (prayer time)
    • Love You ‘Til the End by The Pogues

See His Love first debuted at GP a few months ago on Easter.  Incredible song!  Powerful lyrics!

Hope Now was also recently added to the repertoire.

Love is Here was new last week.  Great song!  I haven’t listened to a lot of Tenth Avenue North, but I like everything that I’ve heard so far.

Here With Me was the only “oldie” in the lineup today.  For me, this song is getting a little stale, but it did really fit well for the prayer time…

Love You ‘Til the End is a great song.  I think we used it one other time during the “GP at the Movies” series last summer.  Kevin Herrington made his lead vocal debut today.  Wow! is all I have to say.  Kevin - Andrea has decided that she wants you to sing this at my funeral.

The band:  1 female and 2 male vocalists, all 3 playing acoustic guitar, and keys (piano and strings mostly).

Be sure to check out some setlists from other churches all over the country (check that) world over at Fred’s Sunday Setlist Extravaganza.

    Friday Landscaping Project

    June 26th, 2009

I thought I’d share my morning project with you.

We’ve got two large oak trees in the front yard.  A previous owner built some wooden planters around the trees.  However as the trees have grown, the roots have pushed up the boards.

In a moment of insanity, I thought it would be a good idea to build up a wall around the trees.  I wanted to go three-high on the blocks, but I decided that two was plenty after adding up the cost…

tree-projectAs you can see, I miscalculated the number of blocks required.  I stepped it off at 25 blocks per layer per tree and bought 100 blocks.  I had to go back and buy 6 more…

After unloading and carrying 106 blocks, I am convinced that the blocks are heavier than they look.  I’m not sure if I’ll be able to move tonight.

Either tonight or tomorrow morning (when it’s cooler, in other words), I’ll pull out the boards and start backfilling with dirt.  I’m thinking about putting some mulch on top, but I haven’t decided for sure.

Are you sweating today?  Feel free to share.

Bullet - a poem by Jada

    June 24th, 2009

Jada recently wrote this poem about our dog. She also drew this picture of Andrea walking Bullet to go with the poem.  I thought I would share.

    bullet-poem-drawing

    Bullet

Bullet is a good dog and a food dog.

Bullet is a fun dog, a run dog, and a lay-in-the-sun dog.

Bullet is a toy and a boy dog.

I love Bullet and he loves me.

If he loves me, I bet he will love you too.

    Bullet is a FUN dog,

    And a tired dog.

    Sunday Setlist … June 21, 2009

    June 22nd, 2009

Greetings networld! Ronnie is away on assignment, and he has graciously asked me [Denny Bray] to sit in for him and bring the much anticipated Sunday Set list your way. While I’m honored, I have to pause and wonder what state of mind he was in at the time… but that’s another story for another day.

    On with the set list:

    • We Shine - Fee
    • The Time Has Come – Joel Houston
    • Solid Rock – Delirious?
    • Love is Here – Tenth Avenue North
    • Show Me What I’m Looking For – Carolina Liar (offering)

**** An interesting sidebar to kick off the details. When we got together to rehearse this set, something was missing. The groove just wasn’t there, and I personally just wasn’t “feeling it”. Concerned, I walked in this morning to discover no air conditioning and some grumpy folks (yours truly included). Things were not clicking like usual, but we prayed hard for God to use us, and man…did he ever! The vibe was electric….

We Shine – I’ve only been drumming for GP about 8 months, and I think I’ve played this 10 times. Quite honestly, it never gets old. There are few songs that are guaranteed to whip people out of their seats and get them jumping like this one. I took a little extra time to read the lyrics this time out and understand why this is such a favorite. Silly Dad’s…you thought this was a typical lazy Father’s Day and we just jolted your butt awake! Welcome to GP my friends….you’re welcome… now let’s worship GP style!

The Time Has Come – I believe this was the second time we have played this great tune. This has quickly become one of my favorites as there is a lot of texture for the drums. One thing is constant however is the bass drum driving the beat to the point of speeding. The guitar riffs were played really well, and Carmen belted some great vocals. Trailing We Shine seemed a perfect transition and kept the worship energized! I have a feeling this will be played again very soon!

Solid Rock – So the first two songs were pure adrenaline and our attempt to get things fired up. What to do next? Why not set you right into a nice little groove to get those heads bobbin and shoulders bouncing. Solid Rock is a GP standard, but done different ways to keep it fresh. This week, Mike got his rap on and laid down some kickin’ lyrics. Jim (bass) and I were dancing all over the beat, keeping it tight…but floating some syncopation around to keep ya’ guessing. Rod was piping some serious Stevie Wonder – ish texture down. Kind of like “The Roots”…but different. I don’t know who was grooving more, the crowd or our guitar players! Had they not been confined by cables, we may have lost them for awhile. The morning is setup for what was to be an OUTSTANDING message delivered by our guest speaker, Clark Mitchell (Journey Church, Oklahoma).

Love Is Here – a new one for GP and I can promise you this will be around for A LONG TIME! Beautiful melodies and the words are very powerful! We toned this down a little more acoustic than the recording, which game me time to feel the song and let the words speak to me. I glanced out beyond the drum shield and could see I wasn’t alone, God was here. This is why I do this folks; to help God anyway I can to get his message across!

Show Me What I’m Looking For – A catchy little tune that seemed to work pretty well. I have to admit, I snickered a little when I realized the irony of when we were playing this song (offering). A little Tom Cruise voice was yelling ‘Show Me the Money”…but I digress. Carmen belted the breaks in this which you really had to be here to admire.

I’ve had my share of “Great Sundays”, but the “story” of this Sunday will remain a memory for awhile. Thanks Ronnie for letting me sit in and thanks to you all for taking your valuable time to read.

The Band: 2 screaming vocals, 2 screeching guitars, some funky keys, slammin’ bass, and yours truly behind the drum shield!

    Thanks Denny!
