    Sunday Setlist… August 2, 2009

    sunday-setlist-header

Greetings good people of the blogosphere!

What a Sunday…  Today kicked off the new “Awakening” series at GracePoint.  So of course, we had to pull out a little Switchfoot today.  We had a minor technical gaff in the second service, but overall, it was a solid Sunday.

I didn’t realize it until a few minutes ago, but I hadn’t played in church since May 17… That’s a long time!  Today I played electric mandolin on the first four songs and acoustic guitar on the last two.

    The songs:

Awakening is one of my favorite Switchfoot songs, and a lot of fun.  It was a great way to kick off the service and gets things fired up.

Pull Me Out made it’s second appearance at GP.  We used it back in May, but only in the first service.  (Coincidentally, this was the last day that I played…)  It was cut in the second service due to time.  Great song.  Even though it was new, I could see people singing along.  I imagine they’ve been hearing it on the radio.  I was a little concerned it wasn’t quite energetic enough to kick off the worship set, but it seemed to work okay.

Take It All is one of my favorite Hillsong United tunes.  It’s a blast to play and sing along to.

Salvation is Here is another good song from the Hillsong United folks. “I know my God saved the day!”

God With Us is a cool song.  I have no idea if anyone was singing on this one, becuase I was too busy singing…  Good stuff!

I Can Only Imagine hasn’t been used in a long time.  Powerful song, although it’s been overused/overplayed a bit over the last ten years.  Rod and Tommy were wanting to do it, so we threw it in.  Rod recorded the strings, percussion, etc… and we just waited around for the second verse to come along before we jumped in.

In the second service, something sounded a little odd in the monitor mix.  It turns out that there wasn’t anything coming out of Tommy’s amp.  He didn’t know until after the service that a battery in a pedal died, and killed the signal…  So he played air lead guitar on I Can Only Imagine.

After the offering, he went back behind the curtain to make sure his amp was on.  But he never came back!  We were supposed to play Awakening as the exit song and I didn’t know the lead stuff.  In fact, I was just playing straight rhythm and some background stuff all along.  We all kind of looked at each other and launched into itanyway.

It was my opportunity to play lead electric mandolin, and I blew it by just playing rhythm…  Hopefully, it didn’t sound too bad.  But what are you to do when the lead guitarist walks off stage 30 seconds before the song starts…

The band: one male and one female vocalist, electric guitar, electric mandolin/acoustic guitar, bass guitar, keys, and drums.

I love “God with us”. Sounds like a great day.

    2. Funny how many people asked me what happened to Tommy after the song…thanks for clearing that one up! Good day today - you guys rock!

I just figured Tommy’s contract ran out at 12:15 and he was re-negotiating :-)

For I am Tommy, Lord of the Idiots.

I’ve walked off the stage before, when I had a crappy attitude, and realized I wasn’t enhancing the worship. I guess the question burning in my mind is: is he coming back?

    6. Ronnie says:

Windbag, I sure hope so. I’m supposed to play with him again on the 16th. I probably ought to learn all the lead stuff just in case.

I think they were giving last call on the muffin’s. I actually left too, but because my mac was covering for me…nobody noticed!
